Nothing Beats Summer in Alaska

There’s no way that you would choose to leave Alaska in the summer. This is the place to be. We are inundated with tourists but they don’t come to the watering holes that the locals do, unless they are escorted. Take the Whale Fat Follies as an example. The humor in this stage show is pretty funny, but it just wouldn’t be to a visitor without explanation.

Then, look at the golf courses. It’s pretty hard to get a tee time at any of the courses unless you (1) are a military general, (2) you play ladies day, which means morning, (3) you pay big bucks for a charity tournament.

We also have our 6-week season for baseball, featuring the Anchorage Bucs and the Glacier Pilots. There are 4 other teams in the Alaska Baseball League, and when the season ends, the American Legion Teams take over the beautiful baseball field at Mulcahy Park. This was re-surfaced just two years ago by the Legion, and it’s many features include quick drainage, so that no games have been rained out so far.

It doesn’t take long to leave the city for the wild country. . . (tell that to some bears who lurk around in people’s yards here) . .. Driving north, you come to some beautiful lakes with campgrounds available, and you have a choice of Wasilla or Palmer at a fork in the road. Well, it’s no longer a ‘fork’ but a cloverleaf, as the traffic has increased unbelievably. Palmer hosts the State Fairgrounds which is the venu for other events than jut the State Fair. The Girl Scouts has a recent encampment where 700 girls from the state joined for 3 days. The Pioneers of Alaska and other clubs use the facility, too. Palmer also has the beautiful Finger Lake, where the Elks have set up their lodge at the sits of Barry’s Finger Lake Resort, a former popular spot.

Wasilla has become a city and jut out of town you will find the Iditarod Museum where you can meet some of the veteran dogs, and pups, too. Further down the road before you get to Goose Bay, is Settlers Bay Golf Course, which has been rated the best in the state. They also have an auto race track, which has dedicated followers. Big Lake and many smaller lakes are just a few miles out of town, and Big Lake is in the process of incorporating to become it’s own city.
So you can see there is incentive to visit Anchorage, and its environs.

Enjoyed my tour of Anchorage………..with your commentaries….on everything interesting going on not only in Anchorage, but all over the state!
It’s hard to believe that you left Anchorage…….for some steaming weeks in Texas! We’re in
a ten=year draught……still unbroken……..although, finally this week (Dec 5) we had a 2.5 inch rain in and around Dallas. We lost quite a few trees this summer……and the hills just southwest of
Dallas…..are dotted with green, brown, bronze and red this December month. (The brown’s are the dead trees!)
Thanks for my computer tour of your wonderful city…….and state!
